Spoiler alert: Budweiser beer and many more are now banned in Delhi.
Beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev has been banned from selling beer in Delhi for 3 years. Delhi government has put a ban on the sale and purchase of Budweiser, Stella Artois, Corona and Hoegaarden beer. This comes after an alleged local tax evasion by AB InBev came to light.
An investigation by the excise department found that barcodes on a set of beer bottles were duplicated. This meant that the company paid excise duty only once for the sale of multiple bottles and evaded taxes.
The brewer argued that the discrepancy could be due to technical or clerical errors in the barcoding system.
The company’s warehouse in Delhi has been sealed until further notice. Till then, no fresh stocks of any products from AB InBev can be sold in Delhi.
Other than the manufacturer, who just lost millions of profit because of the ban, party-goers will also face the wrath- given that Budweiser, Corona and Hoegaarden have been favourites for years.
The company has filed an appeal which is under consideration. In another blow, the government turned down AB InBev’s plea for putting the ban order on hold while the appeal is pending.
