After the latest amendments in the law, traffic police is only issuing challan on the road. The payment and collection of fines are being made in courts or traffic police stations.
Court challans can be paid online. You don’t necessarily have to go to the court to clear the fine.
You have to appear in the appropriate court on the date and place mentioned the challan. If you admit that you violated a traffic rule, the court will ask you to pay the fine.
You can also choose to deny the violation. But then you’ll be asked to submit the proof in support of your claim. Finally, the court will decide if you have to pay the fine or not.
If a traffic police officer issues an on-spot challan, you can pay it immediately.
As per a report by News18, you can avoid a hefty challan by paying Rs 100. If you have forgotten important documents like insurance papers, drivers’ license, registration certificate etc, at home, you may get 15 days to present such a document in the court.
Once you present the documents, the challan will be cancelled. You’d still have to pay Rs 100 to the traffic police for not having documents on the road. After which, you’ll get an order to appear in the court to present the documents.

You should never avoid paying your challan. If you have a hefty penalty due, you must pay it or contest against it. Otherwise, the consequences can be severe. You might receive the challan through courier or through a constable. If you still don’t pay it, you may get called in a court to explain the delay. Finally, if you don’t pay the challan on time, you might end up losing your license.
