The transport department of Delhi auctions the most desired registration numbers like 0001 or 9999. However, recently it allowed the allocation of registration numbers to car buyers. For Rs. 25,000, a Delhi resident can choose the most sought after numbers. Also, auctioned numbers are excluded under this scheme.
Earlier, Rs 20,000 was the quoted price to get a registration license number of choice. And it required making multiple visits to the transport department. Now, buyers can get it at the car dealership itself.
Getting to choose your car number can serve many purposes like- it’ll be easy to remember, it could be your date of birth or house number or if you’re into astrology, you can choose your lucky numbers!
You can get the registration number while buying your new car. Within half-an-hour of making the purchase, you can choose a number. You can make an online payment of the required fee.
Alternatively, e-auctions allow two-wheeler buyers to get the desired registration number. One has to pay a minimum reserve price for this. This allotment used to be discretionary. After 2014, the Delhi Government allowed a fixed minimum reserve price to be charged for e-auctioning. These auctions are a major source of revenue for the transport department.
